If you don’t know what the hell that means, you’re likely under the age of twenty.  The nerds start out this week with a list of some sounds your children will never ever hear.  Also on the list, Art’s favorite movie projectors, and the and Crashboy’s favorite:  the poetic national anthem scored sign off of a TV station.

One sound all of us will continue to hear however is the tender strain of someone spreading gossip.  And according to a new study commissioned by, of all people a cosmetics company, women will typically only wait 32 minutes before spreading that juicy tidbit they’ve just heard. We take a close look at the sexist results and wonder just how the surveyors came up with their numbers.

The nerds are quite happy to not be on the dating scene anymore.  Especially now that everyone has a smartphone, and there’s a whole new set of etiquette to learn. Do you leave your phone in your pants?  If so, that might not be the only thing in your pants that night.

Now that the economy is recovering/crapping out again  (pick one), who better to go to for some clarity than… Tay Zonday??  The Chocolate Rain-ite is back with a look at what’s ailing us financially, but Crashboy finds a few flaws in his musical primer.  (In related news, Batman is part of the 1%)  None of those people however was down in “Freedom Square” Tuesday morning when Bloomberg and the boys swept in to… sweep up.

It was a busy week in iPhone news.  Apple released an iOS update to fix their battery problems, but met with only limited success.  Also, some folks on the intertubes discovered a panorama feature on the camera of the iPhone.  It’s hidden however,… much like the man who does the UK voice of Siri, who was watching TV one day only to discover that… he was the man who does the UK voice of Siri.

All that plus, the haughty hipness of a hip holster, how to not get a promotion, and why it might be a good idea to let your parents meet each other early in a relationship.

Have you ever thought Uranus was boring? (don’t go there)  Scientist have for years thought it was pretty much the most boring planet in our solar system.  Not any more.  Certainly not after a series of explosions the size of Texas shook the blue planet last week.  What caused the explosions remains a mystery.  One mystery that did get solved this week is who exactly was responsible for the six foot Lego man who washed up on a Florida beach recently.

L.N. producer Ellen Smithee talked to the nerds recently about bringing a more.. balanced voice into the Flimm building.  Thus the welcome appearance of author and geekette Amber MacArthur who stops by to tell us why we’re never going to get a “dislike” button, and whether or not she really was in Girl Scouts.

CNN would never run with a misleading headline, would they?  If they say “Netflix takes up 32.7% of Internet bandwidth”, you can trust it’s really true, yes?  Well,……. no.  The nerds dissect that claim and in doing so discover the pros and cons of the popular streaming service.

Who doesn’t love Shweddy Balls?  Apparently a mom’s group in the States is in a bit of a tizzy over Ben & Jerry’s new flavor which pays tribute to the now famous SNL sketch.  But Crashboy is suspicious of their intentions.

Facebook had quite a week, didn’t they.  First they annoy most of their user base with yet another face lift, then they announce a major shift in the entire site with their new “Timeline”.  Might it be time for Google+?

The tech world was rocked this week by the news that scientists had recreated images from people’s brains.  Translation?… Get ready for a DVR for your noggin’.  Hopefully it will be ready in time for the kids whose father retouched family vacation pictures to digitally insert Ewoks.

Did you see the viral video of the seagull who stole the camera and went for a joyride with it?  Well, neither did Art.  But millions of people have now watched this thing and the nerds are crying foul, but still giving props to what has clearly been a very successful viral marketing campaign.  What hasn’t been successful however is the one dollar coin.  The U.S. government has tried everything to get us to love this thing, but the proof is in the pudding.  Or at least, in the 1 billion dollars of unused coins now sitting in the basement of the federal reserve.  The Nerds wonder if it’s perhaps time for an arranged marriage.

This week, Crashboy points us in the direction of a New York Times article that may explain the crappy sleep you’re getting.  Exposure to blue toned light such as that in LCD screens seems to harm the production of melatonin.  So put that smartphone away loooong before you get to bed.

Has Art turned into his mother?  So thinks Crashboy after Art tweeted this week about a 1980′s video dating montage that looks suspiciously like one he’s seen just a few times before.  That doesn’t stop the boys however from speculating on the big question: Can a viking in the 1980s truly find love?

All that plus, does Apple own all touch screens, how to fly a zeppelin, and how one LN listener went rigid at our flaccid comments last week and hunted down Jimi Hendrix’s plaster penis.

Feeling lucky, punk?  Google’s not.  All indicators are pointing in the direction of the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button going the way of the dodo.  You won’t hear any weepy eulogies here however.  Are you ready for .coke?  How about .nyc?  The intertubes are about to get a whole lot more crowded now that ICANN has opened the floodgates to hundreds of new domain names.  You can have one too if you happen to have a few hundred thousand dollars sitting around.

Does excessive gaming change the wiring of your brain?  A new study out of China says yes.  But the nerds find the study to be a bit less compelling than the accompanying graphic which tells Crashboy a bit more about himself than he’d like to know.

What’s fair use these days?  After all the internet has become one big heaping plate of plagiarism.  This week the nerds look at what is and isn’t considered fair use in the wake of the lawyer initiated demise of a witty Twitter feed that used Peanuts comic strips.

All that plus, Lesser Nerds updates on the trials and tribulations of a CHiPs star, a Facebook app for the iPad, and why that Kobe steak might not be quite as appetizing as you think.

If a company from Puerto Rico gets its way, we could be seeing iris scan technology in a lot more machines, including your cell phone.  But as one of the nerds points out, the chances of Minority Report becoming reality are not quite as close as some may think.  What is close however is using your cell phone as your wallet.  And if you doubt it, just ask the folks in New York and San Francisco who will be able to pay for goods using only their cell phone starting this summer.  The nerds do have one question however…. How?

Long time fans of LN will be familiar with the dulcet tones of Wired.com’s geek dad, Ken Denmead.  After all, he dropped by the studio last season for a chat about his new book.  Well, it’s deja vu all over again, as Ken joins the nerds for a chat about his follow up book, and his refreshingly candid answer to the question of why exactly he wrote it.

All that plus, the sandwich in a can, why Microsoft kinda likes Android, and an Ask Art that will have you wondering “How safe is my porn?”

But it’s not all fun and games on the show this week… after all, this week brought the death of Osama Bin Laden. (ok, maybe it IS all fun and games)  The nerds look at the pros and cons of being behooved to bury the bad guy with brevity, and stand in awe at the man who apparently live tweeted the attack on Bin Laden’s compound not knowing that’s what was going on.  At the same time, they examine the possible reasons that Superman recently decided to announce his U.S. citizenship.  And no, it wasn’t to get free Canadian health care.

Internet porn is changing the way we actually process sexual desire, at least that’s the claim of a new book being released this week.  After all, when the menu is so wide and varied, chances are you’re more likely to find something you really really really like.  Maybe they could come up with a piece of software that tells you what you like, in the same way they came up with a piece of software that tells you is a dirty joke is funny.  Yes, THIS is what we need our technology to focus on in these dark times…. does a “That’s what she said” joke actually work comically.

Did you watch the Royal Wedding?  It turns out the nerds did.  Well, a bit.  But mostly just to see how hot Kate Middleton’s sister, Pippa is.  We put our LN spin on the royal nuptials and look at why the family jammed cellphones one the big day.  Maybe they were the ones jamming Disney’s wifi as well.

Do you have  TomTom GPS?  If you do, there’s a chance Big Brother has some data about you thanks to the company’s policy of selling their GPS data to the law enforcement community.  It turns out one of TomTom’s sources of revenue has been to approach the cops with data collected from their system.

All that plus, dueling camera apps, how to find your stolen camera online (sort of), and a very transparent Ask Art.

What happens when you tie pork fat to a computer keyboard and let birds peck at it?  You get the most unique (and according to one of the nerds, boring) Twitter feed ever.  Meet Valdemars Dudums, the man behind Hungry Birds.  You can also catch up with Morgan Spurlock this week.  The man behind Super Size Me has made a documentary about product placement in films, but ran in to a bit of money trouble since no one would sponsor it.  (no, we’re not kidding) .  The nerds look at how he found his way through, and do a verbal compare and contrast essay on the similarities and differences of Mr. Spurlock and another well known button pushing documentarian.

Why would anyone, much less the US government build a version of a Star Wars AT-AT walker?  Believe it or not, this is actually being talked about.  That is, it was until the sharks in Lucasfilm’s legal department caught wind of it.  (good thing he never made a film about electricity or dialysis machines)  Crashboy reminds us of the awesomeness of Gene Roddenberry, while Art questions the wisdom of bipedal automatons.

All that plus, the sneak preview of Battlefield 3, a Russian dead alien hoax, and the best (and perhaps only) Super Mario marriage proposal ever.

As when it comes to geeking out over phone technology, no one does it better than the current commander in chief.  B.O (wait, his initials are B.O?  Why has no one run with that??) was caught in an unscripted moment this week complaining about how old school the phones in the Oval Office are.  And after some cursory research, the nerds decide… he’s right!

A study came out this week illustrating the way magic mushrooms work, showing they actually constrict the flow of blood to your brain, not increase it.  And leave it to the boys to turn it geeky with a Star Trek reference.  Although from what we can determine, Star Trek never made mention of hemp, which is getting a lot more talk as a legitimate cotton alternative.  The nerds briefly visit the sordid history of marijuana, with help from Boing Boing editor Cory Doctorow.

We got an update this week on the topic of in app purchases, seeing as how Apple was hit recently with a class action lawsuit based around Smurfberries. (you can’t make this stuff up.)  And speaking of purchasing on the intertubes, it looks like ebooks have reached the tipping point and are now on the fast track to ubiquity.  With sales up and tablets flying out of stores, ebooks outsold paperbacks and all other formats in February, the first month that’s ever happened.

All that plus, the fast easy way to argue with someone online, the dubious future of the Blackberry Playbook, and what it would sound like if Ronald Reagan and George Takei had a child together.

Are you a fan of Angry Birds?  Are you wondering if maybe you’re addicted?  Well, it turns out the cure for your addiction has been found, and it lies in the hands of… Mike Tyson.  The nerds look at the newest viral ad hitting the tubes this week and digress into the downside of being a muscle bound mouth breather?

Apps made the news this week, starting with the Idaho man arrested for impersonating a police officer (or more accurately impersonating a police car) using only an app that flashed red and blue.  And if Apple evades hot water for approving that party trick, they didn’t escape the wrath of gay groups who had harsh words for Steve and the boys after they approved an app which claims to cure your homosexuality.

The nerds have pined for jet packs on previous episodes of the big show and thanks to a heads up for a reader, we now have the link to a new shiny flying toy that we’ll probably never get.  The nerds look at the Martin Jetpack, a flying monstrosity that can be yours for a mere fraction of a million dollars.  Cheaper however would be an ebook reader and it seems most of the country agrees seeing as sales of ebooks has taken off significantly.

All that plus… invisibility vs flight, the many uses of sock puppets, and why Facebook and bigamy still just don’t go well together.

The iPad 2 seems to have some serious muscle.  So much so that it’s even beating current Macbooks!  The nerds take a peek under the hood, and Crashboy gloats at the depth of his Cupertino connections.  And speaking of Cupertino, what genius made iPhone clocks go BACK an hour on the weekend instead of forward.  The nerds speculate this was less a technical glitch than it was human error.

And while you have your iphone in your hand, why not completely waste 99 cents like the nerds did, and download an app that attempts to put some fun into your bedroom, but instead puts some space to waste on your hard drive.

You would think a legendary history figure would have a bit more respect given to him, rather than having one of his most important parts go missing.  But King Tut’s penis is nowhere to be found.  And no one can agree on how, or even when, it went missing.

All that plus, what the hell does ‘SOT!” mean, Ask Art delved into the delicate world of personal grooming, and why Wisconsin’s union fight has found its way into a legendary little blue pill.

Do smartphones make you sexy?  If you think so, chances are you’re a guy.  Chances are also pretty good that you haven’t gotten any for quite some time.  Maybe you should just go out in a two weeks and get yourself a brand spanking new iPad 2.  Crashboy tells us why he will be doing exactly that, and tips his hand as to who he will bequeath his now antiquated iPad 1 to.

Have you seen the new Old Spice commercial?  More importantly, have you seen the behind the scenes video about how they made the new Old Spice commercial.  The nerds take a look at the continued rebranding of a drug store fragrance also ran.

Northwest University might need a bit of rebranding following last week’s live sex toy demonstration that landed the institution in hot water.  It turns out keeping your students after class and showing them exactly how to use a f#*k saw is not considered sound pedagogy. Who knew?  (Maybe the same people who knew that 50% of men might very well be carrying the HPV virus.)

All that plus, when the world is going to end, listener feedback, and what exactly (or to be more specific, how much) a Florida prison inmate had stored in a very private place.  All on Chuck Lorre’s favorite podcast, Lesser Nerds.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we actually cared enough to do that.  Alas, the “choose your own adventure” books are distant memories from our past.  Or are they.  It turns out one of the founders of the books is attempting to stage a comeback, in tablet form.  Will it work?  The nerds are hopeful.

The nerds are less hopeful however about Apple’s new subscription model that lets you virtually subscribe to your favorite magazine.  The lads from Cupertino seem to be aiming for a bigger piece of the pie than the magazine industry was ready for, and Google is breathing down their necks.

We also spend a bit of time this week helping those sitting at their desks stuck in a productivity gap.  Art takes us to a virtually indescribable web based time killer, and Crashboy tips us off to the idea of rebooting your computer when you find yourself procrastinating.  Why?  Listen and see.

If you watched the events in Egypt and wondered at the possibility of a similar internet shut down happening here, you’re not alone.  The idea of a decentralized internet to keep Big Brother’s hands out of your tubes is occupying the minds of many people, including a Columbia law professor who is trying to build a gadget to keep your internet private.  Maybe he could also help them come up with a way to stop our new wireless technology from interfering with current GPS.

If you’ve found the relationship options on Facebook to be limited and not really applying too much to you, you were probably very happy this week at the announcement of their LGBT options, as well as a few more confusing ones that were clearly written by a lawyer.

Mystery #2 – what was the #1 topic on Twitter this year. I know, I know, it was Justin Beiber, right? Well…. wrong actually. But it was another really greasy accident, so we’ll give it to you.

Mystery #3 – How creepy can the internet get? OK, that’s not really a big one, but this week showed us the depths to which the intertubes can sink when Art points us in the direction of a site where you can sponsor a girl to get free breast implants. And as if that weren’t bad enough, we also look at the man who got revenge on his unfaithful girlfriend … through Netflix. Perhaps she just had too much of the slut gene. Think that doesn’t exist? Well, science would like to disagree with you.

All that plus, online restaurant reservations, a primer on ciabatta, and why the printing press and Jenna Jameson are not as far removed as you think. All on the official podcast of Julian Assange’s legal department, Lesser Nerds.

The Roomba however is most definitely a robot… a robot that needs to watch its back, now that it’s getting some high tech competition.

What happens when you die in space?  More specifically, what happens to your body?  Mary Roach tells us the process is sort of a cross between freeze drying coffee and shaking up brown sugar to get rid of the lumps.

Business is booming for the info ladies of Bangladesh – those two wheeled mavens of  modern tech who pedal their way through the townships doling out advice on anything from crop diseases to contraception. (two topics related only through alliteration)

Bill Gates used to be in the business of seeing the future (before HE started ridding the world of crop diseases).  So, ten years ago when he made some bold predictions about the future of computers, how well did he do?  The nerds have a look.  For example, did he predict the end of instant messaging?

(turns out Lesser Nerds has quite a few lady listeners! Who knew.)

Speaking of the ladies, we take a moment this week to tip our hats and note the passing of Ronald Howes, the inventor of the Easy Bake oven.

But we also celebrate a bit of life, acknowledging the 20th birthday of Adobe Photoshop (also known as Adobe Photoshop Software©… all rights reserved).

The nerds speculate on the ethnic background of the name “The Edge”, while learning U2′s lead guitarist is cutting part of the California coast away in a veiled attempt to live up to his name. Maybe he can move in with the members of the Mars Society, who are currently proving that Belgians might not be the best choice for a trip to the red planet.

Mathew joined the Nerds live on location at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco for a preview to Apple’s iPad announcement, and broke through Steve Jobs’ reality distortion field to explain why the feminine hygiene inspired product isn’t going to be the sole saviour of the publishing industry.

This week’s episode finds the nerds marveling over British artist, Stephen Wiltshire, who absorbed more information in 20 minutes than Art has in 20 years.

We find out what happened to a pair of Crashboy’s childhood crushes. Perhaps he should have given ‘em the mashmallow test, which would have made everyone’s future much clearer.  Art makes an ass out of himself (again), by struggling with the pronunciation of “bona fides“, while Crash Boy tangentially explains Van Halen’s brown M&Ms fetish.  (Listen to this as well, trust us).  We get a valuable inside look at the psyche of the nerds, when Art’s fragile little ego is crushed under the heavy foot of a listener who takes him to task for his brazen offensiveness, and Crash Boy continues to display his Pravda like editing skills on his own offenses).

We also sadly discover fruitbats get more action than the nerds.
